Its buying questions are about trade-offs rather than absolutes. How much durability am I giving up to save a pound in a pack? When does a quilt make more sense than a bag? Which filter is fastest on silty water and which is easiest to maintain on a long trip?

Recommendations follow the standards on this hub. Ultralight gear is easy to over-promise on, so the site is explicit about what has been carried on actual trips by me and what is a research-based pick built from published weights, materials and long-distance hiker reports. Weight numbers are given as measured when a product has been weighed, and as claimed when they have not. Every affiliate link is disclosed on the page that carries it and never influences a pick.
